How much does it cost each month to take judo?

Judo-only membership at Team Camilo Team Camilo Logo is $159 per month.
Membership that includes judo and all of Team Camilo's martial arts programs is $179 per month.

What association is Brevard Judo Academy a part of?

Brevard Judo Academy is a United States Judo Association (a.k.a. USJA) USJA Logo registered club. All promotions are done through USJA. USJA yearly fee is currently $75 for USJA non-life members and $45 for current USJA life members.

Am I too old to start judo?

No. We have had students begin judo in their 80s and even their 90s.

Do I need to be in shape to start judo?

No, judo will help you get in shape.

What should I wear to my first judo class?

Wear comfortable athletic clothing if you don't own a gi.

Is judo safe?

When taught by qualified instructors and practiced correctly, judo is among the safest full-contact martial arts. Safety begins with learning proper breakfalls (ukemi), understanding personal limits, and training in an environment that follows USJA safety standards.

What is judo?

The word judo is derived from two Japanese characters: Ju (meaning "gentle") and Do (meaning "way"). Judo has also been translated by some as the "Way of Flexibility". Dr. Kano explained that judo is based on the principles of "maximum efficiency" (seiryoku zenyo) and "mutual benefit and welfare" (jita kyoei), with the ultimate goal being the "harmonious development and eventual perfection of human character."

What is the purpose of learning judo?

The development of character, mind, and body so that one can contribute something of value to the world.

What are the other main principles in learning judo?

The principle of cooperation (jita kyoei), working for mutual benefit and welfare. The principle of maximum efficiency (seiryoku zenyo), using the least amount of effort to achieve the greatest results.

Where did judo come from?

Modern judo is a martial art based on the traditional Jujitsu, (also spelled Jujutsu), fighting and self-defense techniques of Japan.

What is the difference between judo and jujitsu?

Judo is the modern scientific application of selected jujitsu techniques that may be practiced for self-development, physical education and sport. Jujitsu retains more dangerous self-defense techniques, while Judo can generally be practiced with full force and complete safety.

When and where did judo begin?

Judo was first officially taught at the Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo, Japan in 1882.

Who created judo?

Judo was created by Professor Jigoro Kano (1860-1938). He studied jujitsu at an early age and founded the Kodokan to teach the art of judo.

Do you offer a free trial class?

Yes. We offer a free trial class for new students. Wear comfortable athletic clothing if you do not already own a judo gi. Claim Your Free Trial Class

Is prior martial arts experience required?

No.

Do I need a judo uniform for my first class?

No. If you do not have a judo uniform (gi) then wear athletic clothes.

Do adults train at Brevard Judo Academy?

Yes. Brevard Judo Academy specializes in traditional Kodokan Judo instruction for adults of all experience levels, from complete beginners to black belts.

I've never done judo before. What should I expect?
